Dobos cake

I was flooded with memories as I handed over the envelope containing the Dobos cake recipe to the official of the Metropolitan Confectionery and Gingerbread Industry Board. It's as if the Budapest National General Exhibition of 1885 happened yesterday. That day is so vividly burned into my mind that whenever I think of it, I always feel as if that day were present. I could almost see the waiter handing the plate to the Austrian emperor Francis Joseph and his wife Queen Elizabeth. As their forks broke the melted sugar glaze, then slid down between the chocolate buttercream that evenly filled the gaps between the five cake layers. And the majesties liked my cake, as did the whole of Europe. A clerk's question woke me from my reverie. "In accordance with the previous provision, we issued the contract, according to which from this year, i.e. 1906, the recipe can be used freely by any member of the industry association. Please sign here, where it says József C. Dobos."
