I was looking at the pile of wrapped books in the corner of my room. Fifty copies each of the world's first Tibetan-English dictionary and Tibetan grammar. Written and edited by me, Sándor Kőrösi Csoma, and published in Calcutta, India in 1834. Suddenly, even I had difficulty believing that all this had happened. Although that ‘room’ in Calcutta looked modest to my visitors, it was a suite in comparison to my cell at the royal castle in Zangla, which was only 3x3 meters square. Although no one at home would ever have believed it. They might not even have known that countries such as India or Tibet exist. Would they believe that a former student of Bethlen College from Nagyenyed had made it so far, fighting his way across Asia, through much danger, and learning languages all the while? Who knows?
