Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav

I come from a family of landowners, from Vyšný Kubín. I started going to the gymnasium in Miškovec, soon I was among the best students. I started writing poems under the influence of the Hungarian poet Petőfi. I studied at the law academy in Prešov, where I actively participated in the preparation of the almanac. I worked as a lawyer in Námestov for 20 years. In my works, I express my love for my native region. In In 1874, I had to leave Dolné Kubín for a public speech against national oppression and for the free development of Slovak education and enlightenment. I was preparing for the bar exam in Senica. I devoted myself intensively to poetry. Later I chose the pseudonym Hviezdoslav and a year later I married Ilona Nováková. After my studies, I was a lawyer's assistant in Dolný Kubín, Martin and Senica. During this period, I wrote a cycle of 16 poems Autumn Sounds. I worked as a lawyer for 20 years, but in the end I returned to Dolný Kubín, left my law practice and devoted myself only to literary work. I was elected a member of the literary society in Budapest and in 1913 a member of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts in Prague. After the creation of Czechoslovakia in In 1918, I became a member of the Revolutionary National Assembly.
