Liptovská Mara
The River Váh caused floods in the past, and therefore they built a system of dams and hydroelectric power plants, which have been successfully protecting settlements from floods for many years. One of them is the Liptovská Mara reservoir. It took up to 10 years before I was built. I have an area of 22 km2, and in the deepest place I measure up to 43 m. For a long time I was considered the largest in Slovakia. Thanks to its size, however, it deserves the epithet sea of Slovakia or Liptov. I got the name Liptovská Mara from one of the thirteen villages that I flooded during construction. As many as 940 families had to move because of me, which represented more than 4,000 inhabitants. My main job is to protect against floods, but I also serve to produce electricity using 4 turbines that are located under the dam. During the summer, you can swim on my beaches or go on a sightseeing cruise on photovoltaic catamarans. Various valuable architectural elements and facilities were moved to the Liptov Village Museum in Pribylina.
