Juraj Jánošík
I am the most famous Slovak bandit and national hero. I was born in the village of Terchová in the settlement near Jánošov in 1688. I died by hanging on a hook-on March 17, 1713 in Liptovský Mikuláš. The legend of a brave bandit who "took from the rich and gave to the poor" began to emerge shortly after my death. According to legend, I lived with my gang in the woods between Žilina and Liptovský Mikuláš and ambushed travelers there. I distributed the money from the robbery among the poor subjects. My folk character was identified with heroic qualities, strength, courage and bravery. I became the protagonist of many folk tales and songs. My bandit fate became the subject of many musical, literary and artistic works. Some natural formations, festivals and foods are also named after me.
