Amid the gentle noise of my workshop, surrounded by my tools and sketches, I, Josef Faltus, pondered over the profound task before me. To immortalize Milada Horáková was a huge responsibility. Her story was deeply etched in the collective memory of the Czech people, a symbol of strength, conviction, and sacrifice. The story of Milada was poignant. She was an advocate for democracy and women's rights, showing unwavering resilience even when faced with the formidable post-World War II communist regime. The 1950s saw her unjustly tried and convicted in a sham trial that sent shockwaves across the nation. Despite the gruelling torture and mounting pressure, Milada's spirit remained unbroken. Her tragic end, where she sacrificed her life for her beliefs, was a stark testament to her indomitable will. The memorial spot chosen was in Sněmovní ulice, in the heart of Prague. The challenge was to encapsulate the essence of Milada, to allow onlookers to grasp the magnitude of her life and legacy. My inspiration struck in an unconventional form: a lark perched on a microphone. The lark, in Czech folklore, symbolizes hope and freedom. Its song is one of promise and a brighter tomorrow, much like Milada's ideals. The microphone signifies her voice, echoing her beliefs and defiance against the oppressive forces she stood against. Milada's legacy resonates beyond her time. Streets named after her serve as a perpetual reminder, her narrative is taught in schools, ensuring her story of resilience and defiance against oppression remains alive in the heart of every Czech.
