The Miraculous Stag

Are you interested in mythical creatures? I hope you are because I am. I am the symbol of the Sun and rebirth. Many nations recognize me, but I am especially important to the Hungarians. The reason for this is that I am included in their origin story. An origin story is a story that explains the birth of a nation. According to the Hungarians, there was once a king, Ménrót (or Nimród), who had two sons, Hunor and Magor. The two boys went hunting with 50 soldiers, each. While hunting, they spotted a white stag (yes, me!) and chased it. They chased me for so long that they couldn’t find their way home. They chose to settle where they were. One day they heard a music. They were adventurous young people, so they searched for it and sure enough they found dancing girls who were the daughters of Dúl and Belár. Dúl's daughters were the most beautiful, so they were chosen as wives by the two lost young men. Later, they also had children, so Hunor founded the Hun people, and Magor founded the Magyars – at least that's what this fabulous origin story says. And it's all thanks to me! My story has been re-written several times, for example, in Simon Kézai's Gesta Hungarorum, which means Hungarian Things. They don't know precisely when it was written, but they think it was around 1200 A.D. I also appear in another work, where the whole story was written really well and the date of its creation is also known. The author is the Hungarian poet János Arany, whose work The Death of Buda was published in 1863. It also includes my story, the tale of a miraculous stag. Arany was an excellent poet, he also wrote some very beautiful lines about me, if you have time and want to know more about me, read it!
