My story

Nestled in the heart of Brno, I stand tall as Vila Tugendhat. Designed by the famed German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in the late 1920s, I've witnessed the turbulent times of the 20th century while retaining my graceful Modernist charm. Back when I was constructed, my owners, Greta and Fritz Tugendhat, were enthralled by the new, innovative ideas of Modernist architecture. They dreamt of a home that represented not just luxury, but also a break from tradition, a symbol of the future. I was their dream realized, with my free-flowing spaces, open plan designs, and walls made almost entirely of glass, allowing the beauty of nature to merge seamlessly with my interiors. One of my most striking features is my onyx wall. Depending on the time of day and light conditions, it changes colors, showcasing an enthralling play of warm and cool tones. My chrome-clad supporting pillars are also a sight to behold, reflecting light in a manner that creates an illusion of weightlessness. But as history unfolded, the Tugendhat family had to flee due to the impending Second World War. I stood empty for a while, repurposed by various regimes, and even endured the indignity of being turned into a gym during the Soviet era. Fortunately, the 1990s brought renewed interest in my architectural significance. I was meticulously restored to my former glory and opened to the public. In 2001, I was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, a testament to my cultural and architectural importance. Today, visitors from around the world come to admire my revolutionary design. As they wander through my spaces, I offer them a peek into an era gone by, reminding them of the visionary minds that sought to challenge conventions and redefine the boundaries of architecture. Being more than just a building, I am a living testimony to the ideals, aspirations, and history of the 20th century. Come, step inside, and let me share my story with you.
