Gerlachovský shield
I am the highest peak of the Tatras, Slovakia and the entire Carpathians (2654.4 m above sea level). I am located in the southeastern part of Zadný Gerlach, from which I am separated by the Gerlach saddle. From the top, the ridge continues to Kotlový štít, where it branches off and forms the famous Gerlachovský kotol. My name is derived from the village of Gerlachov, above which I am located and I belong to its district. A document from 1326 says that the village was founded by four brothers, sons of Gerlach. The mountain massif also belonged to this territory, which, according to the custom of the time, was named after the owner of the territory. Only later did they begin to distinguish individual points of the massif. If you wanted to climb my peak, you would only have to go with a mountain guide. The highest peak provides a very good circular view of all the surrounding mountains. Under suitable conditions, you can also see the peaks of the surrounding countries, such as Kékes in Hungary or Lysá hora in the Czech Republic, several Ukrainian and many Polish mountains. At the end of the 19th century, the construction of an observatory was also discussed, but the construction project was not realized here in the end.
