Cycling Through the Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape
As dawn broke over South Moravia, five friends began their bike journey through the Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape. Their first stop was the Lednice Castle, a neo-gothic masterpiece set amidst vast gardens. Its spires and turrets stood tall, as if guarding the surrounding ponds and greenery. The friends dismounted their bikes, walking through the castle grounds, admiring the intricately carved statues, the serene waters of the ponds that are surrounding the minaret, and the vibrant colours of the flowers in bloom. Pedaling onwards through vine-clad paths, the essence of Moravia’s winemaking legacy surrounded them. On reaching Valtice, the Baroque residence of the Liechtenstein family took their breath away. The architectural elegance spoke of opulence and grandeur. They took a guided tour, each room telling tales of yesteryears, of royals and aristocrats, of celebrations and ceremonies. Between the two castles, the group encountered numerous smaller monuments and follies. The Temple of Diana with its Romanesque design, the colonnade with panoramic views, and the St. Hubert Chapel, dedicated to the patron saint of hunters. Each structure had its own story, beautifully melding nature and architecture. As dusk approached, they settled by the Dyje river. Reflecting on the day, the landscape revealed not just castles, but a journey through time and nature's embrace. For the friends, it was a memorable adventure in the heart of UNESCO's heritage.
