Bratislava
On the map of Europe, we can find only a few cities with such a unique location and rich history. I am the capital of Slovakia. The Danube River flows through me, which is the second largest river in Europe. Bratislava Castle is a symbol of rich history and the main landmark of the city. From its window we can see the neighbouring states of Austria and Hungary, which are directly adjacent to Bratislava. Below the castle is the Gothic St. Martin's Cathedral. Among its attractions is a beautiful tower with a gilded imitation of the Hungarian royal crown, which symbolizes the coronation of the Hungarian kings. Between 1563 and 1830, 11 kings and 8 queens were crowned here, including Maria Theresa. Through narrow medieval streets, you can reach Michalská brána, the only gate of the city's fortifications still preserved. An example of Rococo is one of Bratislava's most beautiful palaces - the Mirbach Palace, which today houses a gallery. The main square, the centre of the medieval life of the city and the eventful events of Bratislava's history, is dominated by the building of the Old Town Hall and the Renaissance Maximilian's Fountain, depicting Emperor Maximilian II. in the character of the legendary knight Roland - protector of cities. The main square is the centre of events even today, especially during the traditional Christmas markets and New Year's Eve celebrations. The originally Gothic building of the Old Town Hall from the 15th century now houses the exhibits of the City Museum. The nearby Primacial Square offers the most beautiful classicist architectural monument in Slovakia - the Primacial Palace. A unique collection of six Bratislava tapestries from the 17th century originating from the English royal manufactory in Mortlake is accessible to the public. They depict a legend about tragic love. A popular place is also the restored Promenade on Hviezdoslav Square, dominated by the building of the Slovak National Theatre.
