Orava Castle
I am one of the biggest tourist attractions in northern Slovakia. I was built like an "eagle's nest", on a high rock 112m above the Orava River in Oravský Podzámok. I was once the county castle and seat of the Orava estate, to which almost the entire Orava belonged. Probably, like many other castles in Slovakia, they started to build me on the site of an old wooden castle after the Tatar invasion in 1241. Later I fell into the hands of the Thurz family, who carried out my most extensive reconstructions. Only in 1611 I got my present form. After the Thurz family died out, I had several owners who didn't take much care of me. The biggest disaster befell me in 1800 when I burned out and became useless to my administrators. My rescue was started only after the Second World War. Today I am standing in the area of the castle complex, where there is a lower, middle and upper castle with palaces, fortifications and towers. You can come to visit me and I will also interest you by connection of the three entrance gates with the tunnel, under which there are underground passages. The Orava Museum with various exhibitions is located in the space of the castle. There are also night tours with various theatrical performances and spooky scenes.
