Árpád dynasty
I’m sure you constantly get asked about what you will be when you grow up. Well, nobody asked me. I just became a statue. But what a statue! I portray Lord Álmos, the founder of the Árpád Dynasty or the ‘House of Árpád’. What is that? The ‘house’ refers to a ruling dynasty, and ‘Árpád’ is the name of that particular house, so you're obviously right if you are thinking that it must have been founded by a man named Árpád. Although the situation is much more complicated than that. The Árpád Dynasty was actually founded by me, Lord Álmos, father of Lord Árpád, in the 8th century and it was the first Hungarian royal dynasty. My descendant was King Stephen I, but he only became king about 200 years later, and he was also able to become king because he embraced Christianity. His ancestors were all just lords because they were pagans. After King Stephen, however, every Hungarian ruler was a Christian king, moreover, a king who could call Árpád, and of course me, his ancestor. Then came 1301, when the Árpád dynasty died out with the death of Andrew III. However, the story does not end there. We have to wait until the 18 th century to be dubbed with the title of the "Árpád dynasty", when a historian, Ferenc Károly Pálma first came up it, and it has been used ever since. I hope you are not disappointed now. When you come to Budapest, come up to the Buda Castle. You will always find me in front of Matthias Church, next to the Fisherman's Bastion, where, by the way, you can see a magnificent view of beautiful Budapest and the statue of my descendant, King St. Stephen I.
